Yamaha is taking its first step into the electric two-wheeler market in India. Yamaha plans to launch a new e-scooter based on the River Indie electric scooter by the end of 2025. Yamaha and Indian electric two-wheeler startup River Mobility have jointly developed the scooter and are planning to launch it globally.

The scooter is codenamed RY01. It is Yamaha’s first model to enter the high-selling Indian electric two-wheeler market. The product is expected to use the platform and battery management system of the River Indie scooter.
Engineering work and responsibilities of the RY01 project
The engineering work of the RY01 project is being carried out jointly by Yamaha’s teams in Japan, Europe and the US, and the River Mobility team in Bengaluru, India. The project activities, research and development, powertrain, battery integration and manufacturing work are being carried out under the River Mobility team. However, since Yamaha owns the entire ownership of the project, Yamaha has full control and responsibility over the project.

Production is planned to begin between July and September 2025. The scooter is also expected to be introduced to the public around the same time.

Following Yamaha’s design language, the RY01 electric scooter comes with a sporty and eye-catching look. It may feature features such as full LED lights, a fully digital instrument cluster, and smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth. Furthermore, this scooter is expected to offer modern technology features such as riding modes, cruise control, hill hold control, regenerative braking, etc. This will further enhance its travel experience.
Excellent performance
The River Indie is an efficient electric scooter. It comes with a 4 kWh battery and a 6.7 kW electric motor. According to Indian Driving Cycle (IDC) data, it is capable of traveling up to 161 kilometers on a single charge. It also offers excellent performance at speed. It accelerates from 0 to 40 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 90 km/h. It is very suitable for city traffic.
Yamaha RY01 Ready for Competition
The Yamaha RY01 scooter is expected to be more efficient than its predecessors. It is said to be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 km/h faster and has a higher top speed. Once launched, the electric scooter will compete directly with leading models like the Ola S1 Pro, Ather 450X, TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak. Its high performance and quality design are expected to make it significantly different from other scooters.
